What is SUP Yoga?

So what on earth is SUP yoga? Why do you need a YSUP?

Allow us to explain. SUP yoga is simply when an individual practices yoga on a stand up paddle board. Doing yoga on the water can be done in a class or alone. No matter how you do it – you’ll need great balance and a paddle board tailor-made for this activity.

girl doing yoga on the waterA YSUP is simply a stand up paddle board that was created with practicing yoga in mind. Typically, a YSUP will feature rigid construction, a large traction area, and a wide design. Most boards in this niche will be around 10″ or longer, too. By combining these three traits, a YSUP board offers beginners to advanced yogis a chance to practice while on the water.

Doing yoga on a stand up paddle board is still relatively new. It wasn’t until 2008 before formal classes were being taught on the subject. Sure, yoga has been around for awhile. And people have been stretching and doing light yoga on SUPs for some time, but YSUPs and yoga classes on the water are still relatively new. While new, these classes have taken off in popularity.

What You Need to Enjoy Yoga on the Water

Before you go SUP yoga crazy, you’ll need a few things. We recommend a few items and skills before you hit Downward Dog on the water. To truly enjoy yoga on a YSUP, you’ll need:

  • Yoga Skills: If you’ve never done yoga before, then you may want to practice on a mat before hitting the water. You should have a basic mastery of common yoga poses and the ability to listen to an instructor without looking up from your pose. Yoga newbies may find themselves spending a lot of time in the water – if they don’t learn the basics before getting on a YSUP.
  • Paddle Board Experience: Just like yoga skills are important, so are paddle board skills. You’ll want to have some experience paddling around before you try to do yoga on a SUP. Yoga skills can make up for lack of SUP ability, but make sure you at least get comfortable on a board before you move into Sun Salutation. (If you need a beginner board, check out our reviews guide for more info.)
  • A YSUP: We’ve seen it too many times before. An individual has a SUP made for surfing or touring. Then he or she tries to do yoga on the SUP and ends up struggling. And by struggling, we mean falling in the water. If you’re going to do SUP yoga, you need a board created for such activities. This means you need to invest in a YSUP, or yoga SUP board.
  • SUP Accessories: Many SUP boards come with a full accessories package. You should look to invest in a board with accessories when just starting out. This will make your life 10X easier and allow you to get comfortable in the water quicker.
